The Small Hungers

Every vampire story is about food. To eat, the vampire must surrender his humanity. In The Small Hungers, no one feeds the body without starving the soul.

It’s 2049 and 1.8°C above the planetary baseline. The US is still drilling. International sanctions permit only one export: carceral labour.

As American prisoners touch down in subarctic Sweden to grow food for the country’s swelling population of climate refugees, prison medic Hutch wants no part of it.

She’s still fighting her assignment when she learns that Ojibwe activist Natalie, the only person to crack her defences, escaped on the so-called Russian Road. Hutch doesn’t buy it. That’s the infamous escape route of the prison’s white nationalist shitheads. She stays to uncover the truth.

Bribery, small ugly acts of manipulation, violence—the survival tactics she honed in the prison inch her closer to Natalie. Inevitably, her search leads to Sebastian, a charming local who offers to help get answers about Natalie’s disappearance. A disappearance he engineered. And now he’s after Hutch.

Climate change has emptied his vampire clan’s hunting grounds, forcing them to abandon their home or die out. Before he can act, he must fulfill a dubious prophecy from another age. Hutch’s scar from a fire that nearly killed her will do for a desperate man.

Standing in his way is mercurial Scottish vampire Lachlan. Though he made Hutch his enemy on day one, he’s bound to her by the same prophecy.

To save Natalie, she needs to trust him. To trust him, she must believe she has a future—and deserves one.
